Shopping for pond kits is like shopping for stereos. You could buy everything you need separately in a component system which might give you more performance. However, you can also buy everything in a package which can be much more convenient and save you money.

For the beginning consumer pond kits may make the most sense. There are sizes for every budget and may include underwater lights, brushed filters, pumps, etc. you won't have to do nearly as much research before you buy if you get an all-in-one kit.

Pond kits come in a variety of sizes. An economy kit starts at around 6 feet x 6 feet. An 11 x 16 foot kit is still relatively small and will come with more free extra pieces. If you purchase a larger kit on the Internet it might cost you more, but chances are it will include free shipping.
